Preliminary talks between the Presidency and some Boko Haram leaders have started rekindling hopes of freeing 219 Chibok girls kidnapped from their school dormitory more than a year ago.
From what was gathered by the source, the new deal is being brokered by some confidants of the Presidency and the sect. Some key commanders of Boko Haram in detention, it was gathered are also eager to be part of the initiative. Some mileage gained so far it was learnt include:
• Likely release of some Chibok girls to show the readiness of Boko Haram for negotiation;
• Involvement of some Boko Haram leaders, on whom the United States Government placed ransom, in the peace deal;
• Commitment of the Buhari administration to the negotiation.
It is believed that the President is however extremely cautious on this offer of negotiation and has ordered security agencies to screen or certify those Boko Haram commanders interested in facilitating the latest negotiation to ensure that they are bonafide leaders of the sect and to avoid waste of time and resources as seen in the last administration.
