The Making Ooni of Ife: Fierce Succession Battle Begins...See List Of Ruling Houses Likely To Produce The Next Ooni Of Ife

Following the completion of formalities for the burial of the immediate past Ooni of Ife, Okunade Sijuwade, a fierce succession battle has begun among the four ruling houses in Ile-Ife.

These include, Lafogido, Giesi, Ogboru, and Oshikola. However, it is most likely that the next Ooni of Ife will emerge from the Giesi ruling house which last produced an occupant to the position – Ooni Derin Ologbenla – between 1880 and 1894.

As such several princes in the Giesi ruling house believing it is their right have begun a flurry of activities they expect would culminate in one of them succeeding Oba Sijuwade.

According to a Premium Times source, during a meeting conveyed by 91-year-old Pa Aderibigbe, the elders of the Giesi ruling house “announced and affirmed that the time is now for the process of filling the gap created in the Kingship of Ile-Ife to commence”.

Prescribed forms have been given to interested princes of Giesi ruling house which they are to return to the family within the next couple of days after which they will be screened.

However, the emergence of the Ooni will depend on how quickly the oracle selects the appropriate occupier to the throne of Ife after which the name will be forwarded to the Local Government.
