A major online drug trafficking case involving more than 200 kilograms of cannabis was reported by police Monday. The case implicated a significant number of suspected drug users from “dozens of universities” across China. The anti-drug criminal investigation unit of the Longwan branch of Wenzhou Public Security Bureau in May became suspicious of online chatter which implied possible drug dealing.
The police then decided to carry out a secret investigation resulting in 23 suspected drug producers being arrested, and more than 200 kilograms of marijuana being seized.
The police said a lot of the drug dealing was through QQ, a popular online messaging platform in China. The drug gang set up an online store with the help of a 16-year-old middle school student called Wu, selling cannabis under the disguise of chocolate, tea and other products.
The police investigated 15 QQ group chats, with the number of participants in each group ranging from several hundred to more than 2,000. Many of the buyers were college students, the police said.
