A video has shown the horrifying moment an elephant went haywire causing panic as it chased people around during a local festival.

This video captures the terrifying moment an elephant went on the rampage during a festival in India.

The footage which was captured by a stunned member of the public shows the giant beast thrashing around in the middle of a road - while a rider still sits on its back.

The elephant smashes into a stall by the side of the road a number of times as horrified locals scatter. It then turns and begins running down another road - with the man clinging for dear life on its back.

As the elephant continues its chilling rampage, the rider spots what appears to be a piece of wood and makes a leap for it - holding on several feet in the air. He then drops to the floor and runs away as the animal continues raging through nearby shops.

The footage ends with the elephant trotting down the road.
