A woman was given a suspended jail term after she spent N900,000 buying luxury items for herself thinking she has won the lottery.
A French woman believed her numbers had come in on the EuroMillions lottery and went on a huge spending spree, only to realize that she actually didn't win. The woman has been left devastated and handed a suspended jail term.
According to reports, the woman, from eastern France, spent thousands after she mistakenly believed she’d cashed in.
But payments for clothes, perfume and other luxury trinkets bounced and now she’s been given a suspended jail sentenced and must pay all of the money back.
She managed to spend around €4,000 (about £3,000) before a family member checked her tickets only to discover she hadn’t won anything at all, Metro reports.
The woman believed to be in her 40s has appeared in a court in Besancon on fraud charges.
French press reported that when she realised she hadn’t won the jackpot, she forged a story about her handbag being stolen to explain the irregular spending.
But, CCTV footage quickly unravelled her excuse and she was given a four-month suspended sentence and ordered to pay the money back in full.
